When you become a driver with Number 6, you will be joining Bideford’s largest and most professional private hire and taxi operator with over 30 years experience.
You will join in our commitment to deliver an outstanding customer service throughout North Devon and beyond. With many account clients and unique access to Bideford’s lucrative late night business, you can be assured that there will be work when you want it.
At Number 6 we believe that hard work deserves rewards and you will earn more than being an independent rank based operator or working with some of our smaller competitors. We receive over 100,000 telephone calls a year.
You will receive the best training available from our driver training programme and will be provided with everything you could possibly need for a long and prosperous career with Number 6.
To become a Bideford taxi driver you have to:
- Pass two training courses
- Pass a medical
- Be over 21 years of age
- Have held your driving licence for at least one year.
Once qualified you will be a self-employed driver, sub contracting to Number 6.
Do I need my own vehicle?
No. Number 6 will rent you a licensed vehicle ready to work. Alternatively you can purchase your own vehicle, Number 6 will give you advice and support on what to buy.
Do I need experience?
You do not necessarily need experience of driving a private hire vehicle. If you are enthusiastic, reliable, have a good knowledge of Bideford and the local area and are personable and presentable, you are welcome to apply to become a Number 6 driver. You will need a Torridge District Council licence in order to work for Number 6.
How much will I earn?
The answer to this question is completely in your own hands. Naturally, the more journeys you complete, the more money you will receive. On average drivers work approximately 45 hours per week and, depending on when they work, the average take home earnings after expenses would normally be £250 to £400
Will I be paid cash for every journey?
There are two types of booking at Number 6. We offer a number of account based services. For these journeys, you will not receive cash from the client, but you will be paid weekly, by cheque or directly into your bank account.
Secondly, there are cash bookings. For these journeys, the passenger will pay you directly, in cash, when you have completed the journey.
Will I be self-employed?
Yes. All drivers are self-employed and sub-contract to Number 6.
What do I need to become a driver?
Before starting work with Number 6, you will need to provide us with, a full clean driving licence and 2 forms of identification clearly showing your current address.
When can I start?
If you are already a licensed Torridge District Council driver then normally straight away.
If you require the full training then it could be up to 6 weeks by the time all the training is finished.
